Every summer thousands of people will be seeking the sun abroad. A large proportion of them will choose to fly to their various destinations and consequently there have been a number of references in the press and media to the connection between flying - especially on long haul flights - and the possibility of suffering from DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). In effect a number of factors can cause DVT, a condition whereby a clot forms in a vein in the leg. This can happen after an operation for example or following any sort of trauma to a muscle or bone. Two specialist DVT nurses based at Ysbyty Gwynedd, have been working in the field since January 2001, facilitating the process of treating those patients suffering from DVT. The service that the Trust offers in this particular field has been further enhanced and extended with the establishment of a team of nurses in the community. Following diagnosis at the Hospital, patients suffering with DVT are seen in their own homes and treated accordingly. This team is one of only a very small number of similar teams working in Wales. The advantages of this system of visiting patients in their homes is the fact that those living in more remote areas are able to receive care without having to travel at all and treatment is also available at the weekends.
