COMMUNITY HOSPITALS & REHABILITATION: Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

Physiotherapy

  • Assist patients to return to or maintain their full potential in respect of normal function, movement and fitness.
  • By assessment, provide treatment and advice to help, reduce or eliminate pain and restore independence.
  • Prevent admission to hospital and promote early discharge.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is a health care profession that provides services to people whose ability to function in daily life has been disrupted.  Causes of disruption include physical, psychological or developmental problems experienced by people of all ages.

Purposeful activity, splinting, special equipment, skills training, counselling and environmental modifications are used to maximise the person's ability to attain independence in everyday living.

Locally, the Occupational Therapy Service aims to:

  • Provide appropriate intervention to meet the individual's needs whether in hospital, home, workplace, school or other venue in the community.  Examples include teaching new techniques and providing equipment which facilitate independence in personal care, reducing environmental barriers and providing resources to lessen stress
  • Facilitate a seamless rehabilitation process through liaison with Occupational Therapy colleagues within the Trust, in Social Services and in specialist settings
  • Take into account the views of clients and carers, relevant audit results and research in developing the service
