WOMEN AND FAMILIES : School Nursing            
 

A School Nurse is a registered nurse who works as part of a team along with the School Doctor and teaching staff, and more importantly, parents and / or guardians.  The nurse aims to help ensure that the child's health allows him / her to get the maximum benefit from school life.

The nurse does this by:

  • Being interested in all aspects of a child's life.
  • Educating and promoting good health.
  • Ensuring that the screening programme continues throughout the child's school years.
  • Informing parents of any problems that may arise.
  • Seeing children in school on a regular basis.
  • Being approachable.

The nurse can give advice on:

  • Eating.
  • Behaviour.
  • Obesity.
  • Asthma.
  • Sleep.
  • Bed-wetting / soiling.
  • Promoting health and a healthy lifestyle through health education and health interviews.

Screening:

  • Hearing.
  • Vision.
  • Weight and height.
  • Carrying out the immunisation programme.

Visiting:

  • At home or at school.

At Secondary School:

  • Promoting health through health education.
  • Drop-in Clinics - a confidential service proving information and / or advice on any health matters.
  • Immunisation programme.
