WOMEN AND FAMILIES : Genito Urinary Medicine

The Genito Urinary Department offers a comprehensive, confidential outpatient based sexual health service for patients in Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy.

The main department is based in Bangor with weekly peripheral clinics provided in Llandudno General Hospital, Ala Road Health Centre, Pwllheli and Penrhos Stanley Hospital, Holyhead.

The department provides sexually transmitted infections and HIV training for doctors, nurses (both hospital and community based) and medical students.  Practical training is also provided for the management of sexually transmitted infections to doctors undertaking the DFFP course.

The department organises the Sexually Transmitted Infection Foundation (STIF) Course in North Wales for doctors, nurses, midwives, health visitors or anyone who is interested in increasing their knowledge in the field of sexual health.

Services currently provided include:

  • Screening for all sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
  • Free treatment for all sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
  • Maintain confidentiality.  Results of all tests are confidential and NOT given to a third party without the patient's permission.
  • Most test results are available within one week.
  • Contact tracing after discussion with the patient.
  • Same day HIV testing and results (Monday only by prior appointment).
  • Ongoing care, monitoring and treatment of HIV positive patients, including inpatient care.
  • Availability of a female doctor in all clinics and a male doctor in Bangor.
  • Family planning advice including pregnancy testing, provision of free condoms and emergency hormonal contraception and onward referral to the local Family Planning Clinics.
  • Health education, advice and counselling for a range of sexual health issues, including sexual assault and psychosexual problems, with appropriate onward referrals.
  • Travel expenses may be paid if patients live more than 15 miles from the clinic or have to attend regularly.
