The Trust is committed to the Green Dragon Environmental Management System and in July 2005 an Energy Awareness Campaign was launched to raise energy awareness amongst staff. The Trust's aim is to gain Trust-wide accreditation. Current Environmental Priorities, including Objectives and Targets The current objectives are: - Reduce primary energy by 15% by 2010 based on 2003/04 levels
- Improve the storage of waste on site
- Reduce waste to landfill by a further 10%
- Reduce water use Trust-wide by 1%
- Implement a Green Transport Plan
- Improve performance of building contractors
- Implement a Pollution Prevention Plan
Environmental Performance Energy The Trust-wide Energy Awareness Campaign is still ongoing with the recruitment of local Energy Representatives on all sites. A key element in the Campaign is commitment from senior staff, and in the case of the North West Wales NHS Trust, the Chairman has played an active role in the project. Improved Energy Performance The Trust secured funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, backed by the Central Energy Fund. The Trust have introduced energy saving incentives such as replacement boilers on community sites and the residences, lighting schemes and fitting of thermostatic valves, which will contribute to energy efficiency in the future. Water As part of the Trust's Energy Awareness Campaign, staff have been educated and encouraged, where possible, to reduce water use. Recycling At Ysbyty Gwynedd, 13% of the total domestic waste was recycled in 2005/06, the figure has increased to 28% and 31% Trust-wide as a direct result of improved recycling. The recycled waste includes cardboard which is compacted and bailed on the Ysbyty Gwynedd site, paper, catering oil, fluorescent tubes, engineering oil, electrical waste (WEEE) and surplus equipment / furniture. Other developments were: - Replacment of metal clinical and general waste bins at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Llandudno General Hospital with plastic bins
- New general waste compactor was installed on the Bryn y Neuadd site
- A recycling scheme for patients on the Bryn y Neuadd site has been set up
Future Developments: - Development of a dedicated waste / recycle compound at Ysbyty Gwynedd
- Introduction of recycling across the Trust
Waste Strategy The Trust has developed a Waste Strategy to reduce the total amount of waste produced by 10% of the 2002/03 baseline figure by 2010. View the 2005/06 Environmental Statement |
