During haemodialysis, blood to be treated is pumped outside the body to a machine that acts like an artificial kidney. This machine removes the extra fluid and waste and returns the clean blood to the body.
Most haemodialysis treatments take place in the Elidir Unit's Treatment Room where nurses and technicians perform the treatment. Patients usually undertake haemodialysis three times a week and the average session lasts 3 to 5 hours. |
