Dr Paul Birch was appointed Executive Medical Director on 12 July 2007. 

Prior to that he had been the Acting Executive Medical Director, the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director of the Diagnostic and Support Services Directorate.

Born in Leeds, he undertook his medical training in Cardiff and his specialist training in the West Midlands.

Dr Birch was appointed as a Consultant Radiologist with a special interest in Interventional Radiology and Oncology Imaging in 1989.

As well as his clinical work, Dr Birch has a particular interest in patient safety and medical leadership.  He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the School of Psychology in the University of Wales Bangor and an Associate Director of Gwynedd Local Health Board.
