LHBs    Local Health Boards
Laceration The medical word for a cut or tear
Larynx The voice box, a hollow organ containing the vocal cords
Lateral On the side
Learning Disability A collective term for significant life-long conditions which restrict development
Leukaemia A type of cancer affecting the blood cells
Lithotripter Equipment which eradicates stones, for example gallstones, using shock waves
Liver The organ in the body responsible for cleaning the blood and destroying blood cells when they have been used up
Local Anaesthetic A type of medicine that removes feeling and pain from a specific area of the body for a test, operation or procedure
Looked After The term for children in care
Lumbar Puncture A procedure where a sample of cerebrospinal fluid is drawn from the space around the spinal cord or medicine is injected into the cerebrospinal fluid
Lymph System A network of vessels that transports water and minerals around the body
Lymphocytes One type of white blood cell responsible for fighting off viral infections
Lymphoma A type of cancer affecting the lymph glands
