JARGON BUSTER: S            
 
Secondary Care    Hospital or specialist care to which a patient is referred by their GP
Sedative A medicine that makes a person sleepy
Senior House Officer (SHO) One of the training grade posts a hospital doctor holds after qualifying and before becoming a fully trained specialist (consultant)
Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Any infectious disease spread by sexual intercourse
Side Effects The expected effects of a medicine
Skin Graft The procedure to take skin from one part of a person's body and transfer it somewhere else
Speech and Language Therapy Provide services to adults and children with a communication disorder and/or swallowing difficulties
Spleen The organ responsible for cleaning lymph and and destroying used up red blood cells
Stem Cells Immature cells that can develop into any type of cell, for instance blood cells or tissue
Stent A plastic or metal tube that is used to keep a tube in the body open
Steri-Strips Sterile plasters that are used to close small incisions after operations
Steroids Medicines that are used to reduce inflammation
Stoma An artificial opening, such as a tracheostomy or colostomy
Stroke A sudden attack of weakness affecting one side of the body, the consequence of an interruption to the flow of blood to the brain
Subcutaneous (SC) The word used when a medicine is injected under the skin
Substance Misuse Collective term for drug, chemical and alcohol use or addiction
Suppository A medicine that is given by inserting it into the anus and rectum
Syndrome A collection of symptoms that often appear together
